JR&CO completed the exterior envelope scope for the adaptive reuse project, including installation of 22-gauge PAC-CLAD corrugated wall panels supported by green girt assemblies and mineral wool insulation. The team also installed Kingspan translucent wall panels to introduce controlled natural daylight into interior spaces, along with a mechanically fastened standing seam roof system over the outdoor patio area. All work was carefully sequenced around limited access points and active construction occurring across the bridge deck.

  • Installed 22-gauge PAC-CLAD corrugated wall panels on the historic bridge structure.
  • Completed a 2-inch mechanically fastened standing seam roof system over riverfront program areas.
  • Installed Kingspan translucent wall panels to support daylighting within the adaptive-reuse design.
  • Work performed under special conditions: Over-river construction; limited access; active bridge deck

The Rock Island Bridge redevelopment reconnects communities on both sides of the river and adds a landmark public venue to Kansas City’s growing riverfront. By delivering durable envelope systems on a historic structure, JR&CO helped preserve a regional icon while enabling a new chapter of civic and cultural use.

Overview

Spanning the Kansas River between Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri, the historic Rock Island Bridge was redeveloped into a one-of-a-kind elevated entertainment destination.

Originally constructed as a railroad crossing, the structure sat unused for decades before being reimagined as a public venue combining dining, gathering, and panoramic riverfront views. The adaptive reuse required modern building-envelope solutions that respected the bridge’s industrial character while enabling safe, year-round occupancy.

JR&CO partnered with the project team to deliver exterior envelope systems that support the bridge’s transformation while preserving its visual identity. The completed work blends contemporary materials with historic structure, creating a durable, weather-tight enclosure that allows the bridge to function as a vibrant public space suspended above the river.
